We Engineer Excellence

We Engineer Excellence for California and Beyond.

At BCOE, engineering means rigorous academics, hands-on research, opportunity, and a community that helps students turn ambition into impact. Learn what makes UC Riverside's engineering college distinct.

About us

UC Riverside's Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering (BCOE) is a community of students, faculty, staff, researchers, alumni, and partners who learn, investigate, design, and build across engineering and computing.

Founded in 1989, the college spans five academic departments and interdisciplinary programs. Our students can explore fields ranging from bioengineering and computer science to environmental engineering, robotics, and advanced materials. They also have opportunities to work with faculty, join technical teams, and connect what they learn to problems beyond the classroom.

At BCOE, education extends beyond lectures and assignments. Students learn with faculty, staff, peers, and industry collaborators while finding support and a place in the engineering community.

What sets us apart?

Here, academic ambition and access to opportunity go together. BCOE students study at a leading research university, with opportunities to learn from faculty, join technical teams, and put their ideas to work in labs, design projects, and the community.

That experience is part of a university recognized for research strength and for helping students advance economically.

AAUA research university among the nation's AAU members. UC Riverside joined the Association of American Universities in 2023.
No. 1Social mobility. UC Riverside tied for first nationally in the 2027 U.S. News & World Report rankings.

Find your people. Build something together.

Student organizations, design teams, professional societies, and outreach programs are part of everyday life at BCOE. Students find friends and mentors, take on leadership roles, and build projects together, from solar boats and race cars to software and robotics.

Research you can be part of.

BCOE faculty and students investigate challenges in health, energy, air quality, computing, robotics, manufacturing, and more. Undergraduate students can pursue faculty-mentored research, join collaborative projects, and build experience that may shape their next course, internship, or career.

Across the college, research centers and industry partnerships connect expertise to challenges faced by communities and organizations throughout California and beyond.

The Bourns name has a Riverside story.

BCOE was established in 1989 and named in honor of Marlan and Rosemary Bourns, who founded the Riverside-based electronics company Bourns, Inc. A gift from The Bourns Foundation in 1994 helped strengthen UCR's growing engineering college.

The family's connection to the university continues through support for engineering students, faculty, and STEM outreach. It is one part of a larger story of people and partnerships helping shape the college.

Rooted in Riverside. Connected to the world.

Our students, alumni, researchers, and partners contribute to the region's engineering future. Industry collaboration, applied projects, mentoring, and community outreach connect Bourns to the people and places it serves.
